i'm in a bit of a lull, waiting to get some more film in, so to fill in the gaps i've got some random shots from test rolls and whatnot. no particular theme, just a few frames to help pass the time until i can get out for another subject shoot.
cheers!

retrospective
i had started this long, rambling post about how i got into photography back in high school... but i'm going to skip it. i keep reminding myself that this blog not really about what i write, but more about showing you what i see.
these are a few of the shots i came across as i went back to organize my contact and negative sheets. they're all from 15-20 years ago, probably shot with a minolta autofocus, and on a variety of different films (though most are ilford, so i have had that love affair for a while =p).
cheers!

snybora
another toy, another series... this time it's chris ryniak's snybora, from rotofugi's "lake monsters." this was a special, limited release paint job (i think kirby told me he only did about 15 of them) and was aptly called the "naked mole rat" version... hence the downtown alleys and dumpsters.
you know... "in their natural habitat" and all.
cheers!

tagged in roscoe village
graffiti is big in chicago, so much so in fact, that you can't even buy spray paint within the city limits anymore. and tagging seems to be the dominant form, though there are some more "artistic" spots throughout the city.
these are just a few of the ones i notice on my walk home everyday. it's kind of interesting to me what objects people choose to leave their mark on... like it's some comment about their personality, beyond the flourish of their particular tag.
cheers!

i heart grody shogun!
luke rook invented grody shogun as part of his apprenticeship making sofubi in japan, and he's been cranking out release after release after release. i'v been lucky enough to pick up a few, and the first is this unpainted mixed parts monster. such a great little guy, and so much fun! it's so often that toys become pretty and end up just being looked at, so it's great to find those occasional pieces that are so addictive that it's hard to put them down. luke's definitely onto something here, and i simply can't wait for more packages from him to show up!

foot traffic
i went out around the office one day with my diana, and shot everything from ground level. i'd also just picked up a 35mm back that would give me sprocket holes in my exposures, so i was anxious to give it a try.
as much as i love composing my shots, there's something magical about simply shooting from the hip. or in the case, from the foot. even if you think you have a good idea of what you're shooting, there's still that element of surprise once you get the prints back... it's that feeling of never being quite sure what's going to happen. i think we should all try that a little more often.

solem
if there are four things in the world that i would say blur the line between "hobby" and "obsession" for me, they would have to be: photography, food, cycling... and toys. i've always been a huge fan of toys, and the trend in "designer" toys has been both a creative goldmine and a budgetary disaster for me. (then again, it's not like film photography is exactly cheap, either.)
this little guy's name is solem, and he's part of the lake monsters series produced by chicago's very own rotofugi. roto is a wonderful little shop, and pretty much the only one of it's kind in chicago (or illinois. or the midwest, for that matter.)
he made a great subject for a lazy weekend afternoon shoot around the house, and even though he's only got the one look, i think he can be pretty expressive when he feels like it.
cheers!
